Rising construction permits at what cost? Examining the alarming increase in construction injuries

Construction in New York City is a continuous phenomenon. However, recent reports of the increase in construction-related incidents, injuries, and fatalities have sparked concern. According to the 2022 Nayac Safety Report, incidents related to construction in the city increased in 2022 compared to 2021, with 11 fatalities and 554 injuries.

The increase in fatalities and injuries in the construction industry is alarming. The report highlights that keeping the public aware of the state of the construction industry is a critical component of the mission to improve public safety. It is essential to ensure that construction projects are carried out safely and efficiently to prevent any harm to workers or bystanders.

One of the leading causes of construction-related fatalities is falls, which accounted for more than one in three construction-related fatalities in the U.S. in 2020. Falls from heights can cause severe injuries, including fractures, spinal cord injuries, and brain injuries, and can even be fatal. It is, therefore, critical that construction companies take appropriate safety measures to prevent falls from occurring on their sites.

The rise in incidents, injuries, and fatalities has been attributed to the increase in construction permits issued in the city. Developers are seeking to obtain permits ahead of the implementation of the 2022 NYC Construction Codes in November 2022 and the expiration deadline of the 421-a tax program in June 2022. However, it is essential to prioritize safety over speed and ensure that all safety regulations are followed to prevent harm to workers and the public.

In conclusion, construction is an essential part of the growth and development of cities, but it must be carried out safely and efficiently. The increase in construction-related incidents, injuries, and fatalities in New York City is a cause for concern. It is, therefore, imperative that construction companies prioritize safety over speed and take appropriate measures to prevent falls and other related incidents on their construction sites. The Department of Buildings is working tirelessly to ensure the safety of workers and the public, and it is vital that everyone in the construction industry plays their part in achieving this goal.
